Overcoming Fear

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”    2 Timothy 1:7, NKJV

Fear is something that we battle daily. It knocks on our door as we prepare for a job interview or embark on a new business venture. It tries to hold our hand when a relationship we thought would last forever ends. And it attempts to wrap its arms around us after God reveals vision of our life.

While it is natural to experience fear, know that it is more than an emotion –it is a spirit. The enemy sees no problem in using it as weapon to prevent us from pursuing our God-given purpose. We can spend years bound by fear, unable to take the next steps in fulfilling our destiny. It is incredibly important that we learn how to overcome fear! Here are three strategies:

Know God and His Word

Much fear arises from uncertainty. However, when you know who God is and what He’s capable of doing, you can rest on His promises. You may be laid off from work, but because you know that God “will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19), you don’t wonder where your next paycheck will come from. Find scripture relevant to your current situation, write it down, and pray it daily. This will help you focus on Jesus and not fear. Overcoming Fear

Be vulnerable in prayer

When you pray, tell God about every struggle and source of stress. Be honest about things that keep you up at night. What good is it to pray and leave that moment still filled with fear? When you release your worries through prayer, God exchanges them with the peace of Christ (Philippians 4:6-7).

Obey God

God will call us to do things that make us uncomfortable. Discomfort is scary, but in those moments who will you obey – fear or God? Although we may be afraid of what God is calling us to do, we should do it anyway! The more you push past fear, the more irrelevant it becomes.

Pray this prayer: Thank You Lord for blessing me with purpose and for equipping me with the tools to fulfill it. In those moments when fear tries to hold me captive, bless me the grace to overcome. Help me to remember that You are in control of my life, not fear. Strengthen and encourage me as I pursue my destiny. May You get the glory. In Jesus name, Amen!
